Top Ten Toys of 2017: A Holiday Guide

Child and Santa Claus

Oh boy, do I love Christmas in Mt. Pleasant! Like me, you probably have some last-minute shopping you need to do. While there is more to life than presents and eggnog, as parents, we’d all love to get gifts for our children that they will cherish. I’ve done some digging to find the best toys out in 2017 that you should be able to find right here in Mt. Pleasant.

Dr. Randy’s List

I’ve included links to stores that had them in stock in or around Mt. Pleasant as of this writing, or I’ve linked to a source online that can get them here before Christmas.

Catapults and Crossbows

I’m a big fan of toys that combine learning with fun. Catapults and Crossbows is designed to be an entertaining way to teach kids about the physics of projectiles, helping them learn about energy and motion with the use of ten versions of medieval siege weapons.

Crayola Easy Animation Studio

Have you ever wondered how CGI is done in movies? So have I, which is why I think the Crayola Easy Animation Studio is pretty cool. Children can see the process in action as they design and animate their own character, bringing their art to life via an accompanying app.

Crime-Fighting Superheroes

At Super Hero High School, this well-known champions attend challenging classes by day and learn how to handle their superpowers by night! The action-oriented series is available in multiple scales, including 12 inch versions (move over, Barbie), and includes DC fan favorites like Wonder Woman, Batgirl, and Supergirl.

DIY Liquid Kaleidoscope Set

If you’re looking for a good arts and crafts project, help the kids build their own kaleidoscope! There are many different kits available, but this one includes their own liquid magic wand, allowing their artwork to constantly change when viewed through the eyepiece.

FurReal Friends Tyler the Tiger

This year’s favorite might be Roarin’ Tyler, the Playful Tiger. He’s a big, fluffy tiger (as you may have guessed), that responds to sound and touch. He has over 100 responses, and if he gets roared at, he will bow and let out a big roar in return. And because everybody needs a friend, Tyler gets excited when you give him his favorite toy chicken.

Geckobot

Geckobot is a lego-style robot build that is great for teaching your future engineers about air pressure and suction. He comes with a very detailed, magazine-style instruction manual to help your kids build a wall-climbing robot. He can make it up windows, plastic, whiteboard, and other smooth surfaces. As a bonus, there are six other builds that can be instructed from this kit.

Hatchimals CollEGGtibles

The Hatchimal was the Toy of the Year in 2016, and was near impossible to find. This year, not only will you be able to find these lovable guys, but there are more options. Hatchimal CollEGGtibles are smaller versions of their predecessor. When your child rubs the egg, it will hatch and inside will be one of 70 friends for them to collect.

Janod Balance Scooter-Bike

Balance bikes are better for early riders than a traditional tricycle or bikes with training wheels. They help kids learn to balance, the hardest part of the transition when they transition into bike riding. There are several good options for balance bikes, but the Janod Balance Scooter-Bike is a pretty cool, retro ride.

Nintendo – Super NES Classic Edition

One of the year’s best deals is the return of the Super NES. Now updated for your modern TV, this package comes preloaded with 21 of Nintendo’s best games, such as Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, and Star Fox 2. While last year’s launch of the regular NES Classic was impossible to find, you should still be able to find the Super NES, and at reasonable prices.

Teddy Ruxpin

One of many toys from the 80’s that’s making a strong comeback, Teddy Ruxpin has returned , but this time he is wired up and Bluetooth enabled. What child wouldn’t like their teddy bear to tell stories, sing songs, and interact with them? Teddy Ruxpin even moves his mouth and eyes as he talks. He comes preloaded with three stories and seven songs, but has an app and a hard drive that will hold more content.

From everyone here at Dr. Randy’s office, we hope you have a very Happy Holiday and a safe New Year!
