Costumes, Candy, and Cash – Oh My!

Dr. Randy’s annual Halloween Candy Buyback

Each year, we look forward to our annual Halloween Candy Buyback. We work with Operation Gratitude to send pounds of candy to our troops overseas. Last year’s event was a huge success, and we collected over 700 pounds of candy!

As a pediatric dentist, we know the negative effects too much Halloween candy can have on your child’s teeth– that’s why we make our Candy Buyback into a huge party for the kids. We’ve even heard from kids who like our Buyback as much as they like Halloween itself.

This year, we’re also teaming up with the Charleston branch of Macaroni Kid. No matter how much candy your kids collect this Halloween, they’re sure to have a great time at our annual event.

This year’s Halloween Candy Buyback is on November 7th, the first Saturday after Halloween so mark your calendar!

Getting Ready for the Buyback

After a fun (and exhausting) night of trick-or-treating, most kids feel like they’ve worked hard for their candy. They put on a costume, rang doorbells, asked for candy, said thank you, and repeated the process many times over. To them, it might seem like the candy is their reward for working so hard.

As a responsible parent, you know that much candy is bad for your child’s teeth and overall health. Halloween is one of the most fun days of the year for kids, but eating pounds of candy is unrealistic and unhealthy.

Still, some kids are reluctant to give up any of their Halloween candy. We suggest telling your kids to pick out 20 or so favorite pieces of candy, and then bring the rest to our Halloween Candy Buyback.

It’s a good opportunity to teach your children the importance of helping others. Their candy is going to members of the US Military who will truly appreciate the gift, and your kids will feel great for directly helping our troops.

As for the buyback itself, we pay one dollar for every pound of candy, up to a maximum of five pounds per child.

A Party for a Good Cause

This year, Dr. Randy is attending a continuing education conference out of state, so I’ll be running the event alone. I have a few of these under my belt now, so I know how great it’s going to be. We have plenty of activities planned, and we have even more in the works!

Check back regularly, because we’ll be updating this post and our social media profiles with even more great sponsors and activities!

So far, this year, we have:

Macaroni Kid – The publisher moms behind Macaroni Kid always know where the fun is, so that’s why they’ve chosen to partner with us this year. Their craft table will be the true activity centerpiece of the Candy Buyback, and we’re excited to see how they’ll engage the kids’ creative side.

Monster Mobile Game Theater – If your kids love age-appropriate video games, they won’t want to miss this. It’s a 42’ long mobile gaming theater with four 55” LCD screens inside and three 55” screens outside, and it’s equipped with all current gaming consoles. This is a great opportunity for kids to play video games with their friends and parents. You can find out more here.

Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry – CML makes learning fun, so we’re excited to partner with them for this event. You can read about all of their great exhibits and endeavorshere. For our Candy Buyback, they’ll be providing their amazing Imagination Playground Set, which is always a hit with kids.

Bellies, Babies & Beyond – Bellies, Babies & Beyond is a great resource for new parents, and we’re excited to work with them for our Candy Buyback. They will be hosting a craft activity for our kids. If you want to learn more about what they do, visit them here.

Kids First Swim SchoolsKids First Swim School knows first-hand how important water safety is so they will be there handing out balloons and swim safety information.

Sky Zone – When it comes to trampolines, bouncing, and great exercise, no one beats Sky Zone Charleston. We’re thrilled to have them as a sponsor.

Cinebarre – has donated 10 movie passes for our raffle.

Chick-Fil-AChick-Fil-A’s cow mascot will be on hand to mingle with and delight the kids, and they’ll also have handouts and coupons. More costumes always equals more fun.

Princess of TidesPrincess of Tides will be joining us this year! Cinderella and her evil stepsisters will be out and about at the Candy Buyback.

Charleston Fun Factory – We always love working with Charleston Fun Factory. They’re providing one of their word class bounce houses for the Candy Buyback this year, and we couldn’t imagine having a successful post-Halloween party without their help.

Wonder Works – Kids and adults alike can’t get enough of Wonder Works, so we’re glad they’re on hand for this year’s Buyback. They’re coming supplied with 20% off coupons, and they’re giving away some Ty little Monstaz while supplies last.

In addition to mobile video game theaters, craft tables, bounce houses, and playgrounds, we’ll also be providing another craft table so kids can make cards for US Military service members. Our soldiers will love the candy, but they’ll love the cards even more.

We’re also planning a raffle, with prizes including $40 in Harris Teeter gift certificates and a free lunch or breakfast from Charleston Cafe.

Remember to check back soon, as new sponsors are coming on board all the time. The Candy Buyback is always a hit with the community, and we never know how generous local businesses will be until the day of the party arrives.

As a children’s dentist, our job is fun every day of the year. The Annual Candy Buyback is on another level, though. It’s a lot of work to put it together and make sure everything runs smoothly, but when we see the looks on the faces of our patients as they enjoy the bounce house and all the other activities, we know it’s worth it.

The Buyback also gives us a real opportunity to show kindness to our overseas Military members. Kids love helping people, and so do we. The Candy Buyback might be our favorite day of the year.
